Sargi for Karwa Chauth is the pre-dawn meal a fasting woman eats before sunrise. Her mother-in-law traditionally makes it or sends it. Karwa Chauth falls on Thursday, 29 October 2026. Finish eating before sunrise (6:31 AM in New Delhi), when the nirjala fast begins.
What is 'sargi' in Karwa Chauth?
Sargi in Karva Chauth is the meal that opens the vrat. A married woman eats it in the quiet hours before dawn. Then she fasts until she sees the moon. A Karwa Chauth sargi comes from her mother-in-law. If the two share a home, the mother-in-law cooks it. If they live apart, she sends it.
The custom is strongest in Punjabi homes. Families from other regions have their own pre-fast habits, so the thali in one home can look different from the next. Where sargi exists, it works as a blessing from the older woman to the younger one before a long day.
What goes into a Karwa Chauth sargi thali?
A karwa chauth sargi thali mixes sweet, savoury and fresh food. The aim is steady energy and enough fluid, since nothing passes your lips until moonrise. This karwa chauth sargi items list suits most homes:
| Item | Why it earns a place |
| Fruit (banana, apple, pomegranate, orange) | Fluid and quick sugar |
| Dry fruits (almonds, cashews, raisins, dates) | Slow, lasting energy |
| Milk, or feni cooked in milk | Fluid and a filling base |
| Coconut water | Fluid and natural salts |
| Paratha, or a small bowl of halwa | Keeps hunger away for longer |
| Mathri | The classic crisp, savoury piece |
| Mithai | A token of the blessing |
| Shringar items (sindoor, bindi, bangles, chunri) | Part of the thali, used for the day |
Many families set the food in a decorated thali and cover it with a chunri. Cycle.in have embroidered Karwa Chauth thali sets in red, maroon, yellow and pink. You can use the same set for the evening puja.

Good karwa chauth sargi food follows an order. Start with liquids, move to fruit, then finish with the heavier items. Keep mathri to one or two pieces and go easy on sweets. Too much salt or sugar raises thirst by the afternoon, and the fast gives you no way to fix it. Many homes also skip tea and coffee and choose milk.
When should you eat sargi?
Tradition places sargi before sunrise, in Brahma Muhurta. This window starts 96 minutes before sunrise and lasts 48 minutes. On 29 October 2026, Drik Panchang lists the start of the fast at 6:31 AM in New Delhi. That puts Brahma Muhurta at about 4:55 to 5:43 AM.
The best time to eat sargi is the stretch that lets you eat slowly. Many guides suggest sitting down between 4:00 and 5:00 AM. The answer to at what time sargi is eaten has one firm rule: the meal ends before sunrise. Your karva chauth sargi eating time can sit anywhere in that window. Pick a karva chauth sargi time that leaves room to drink water and say a short prayer.
Here is a suggested plan for New Delhi on 29 October 2026:
| Time | What happens |
| 4:00 to 4:30 AM | Wake up, bathe, wear clean clothes, and take your mother-in-law’s blessings. |
| 4:30 to 5:30 AM | Eat sargi at an easy pace. |
| By 6:15 AM | Drink your last water and make the vrat resolution. |
| 6:31 AM | Nirjala fast begins. |
| 5:38 to 6:56 PM | Evening puja muhurat |
| 8:17 PM | Moonrise in Delhi: the fast ends after the moon sighting and Arghya. |
Note: The fast start, puja muhurat and moonrise times above come from Drik Panchang for New Delhi. Sunrise and moonrise change from city to city, so check your own city’s times. Indian families in the USA observe the vrat on Wednesday, 28 October.
If you keep a prayer corner at home, light a diya before you sit down to eat. Navin Puja Ghee is a non-edible ghee made for diyas.

Can we drink water in sargi?
Yes. Water, milk, coconut water and lassi all belong to the meal. The limit starts at sunrise, when the nirjala vrat begins. From then on, food and water stop until moonrise. Sip through the meal instead of finishing one big glass at the end. Stop a little before sunrise.
Health note: Women who are pregnant, diabetic or on regular medication should talk to a doctor before fasting. Ask your elders too, since homes follow modified fasts in different ways.
Why is sargi important?
The first reason is practical. In New Delhi the fast runs close to 14 hours, from 6:31 AM to 8:17 PM. Sargi is the only meal in that stretch. A planned thali protects your energy for the evening puja and the wait for the moon.
The second reason is the family bond. Karwa Chauth can strengthen ties among women, including the link between a bahu and her in-laws. Sargi gives that link a clear form: an older woman wakes early to feed a younger one.
What are sargi gifts to bahu?
Sargi gifts to bahu go beyond food. The thali often carries shringar items such as sindoor, bindi, bangles, mehendi and a chunri. Sweets, fruit and dry fruits sit beside them. Some mothers-in-law also give money a day early, so the bahu can pick her own cosmetics and adornments.
Kumkum and haldi make a useful addition, since the bahu uses both in the evening puja. The Om Shanthi Tambula Pack comes with kumkum and haldi and fits easily into a thali.
For a larger present, the gifting collection offers incense gift sets for different occasions. They suit a bahu who enjoys a calm prayer corner.
South Indian families exchange similar gifts of kumkum, haldi and fruit as thamboolam during Varalakshmi Vratham. Our guide to puja items for Varamahalakshmi Vratham shows how that gifting works.
How is sargi different from baya?
Many first-time observers mix up the two. Sargi comes from the in-laws and is used before sunrise. Baya comes from the bahu’s parents and goes into the evening puja.
| Criteria | Sargi | Baya |
| Who gives it? | Mother-in-law or an elder woman of the house | The bahu’s parents |
| When it is used | Before sunrise | During the evening puja |
| Typical contents | Food, fruit, dry fruits, shringar items | Sweets, mathri, fruit, clothes |
| What happens next? | The bahu eats and uses it. | It goes round in the thali during the katha, then to the in-laws. |
The evening thali also needs a diya. Ready-made wicks save time on a busy day. Mogra Watt cotton wicks come ready to light.

What other customs surround sargi?
Bath and blessings: The bahu bathes, puts on clean clothes and takes her mother-in-law’s blessings before she eats.
Bindi and chunri: Many women put on a bindi and a red chunri before the meal. Pure kumkum from Om Shanthi works well for the bindi.
Seven items: In some Punjabi homes, the bahu touches seven items before sargi. After the evening puja, she offers them to a panditani.
Head bath: Some women wash their hair the evening before, so they start the day fresh.
Eve of the festival: In parts of Uttar Pradesh, families eat soot feni with milk and sugar on the eve of Karwa Chauth.
The evening ritual ends with aarti. Pure Bhimseni Camphor is a common choice for it.
